Lithium Ion Battery

Key components of a lithium-ion battery are the anode, cathode, separator, and electrolyte².

  • Anode. A porous lithiated graphite is the typical anode¹. It stores the lithium and releases lithium ions to the cathode during discharge². Lithium ions flow to the anode during charging².
  • Cathode. A composite material, an intercalated lithium compound, is typical for the cathode. The cathode defines the name of the Li-ion battery cell¹. It also stores the lithium and receives lithium ions from the anode during discharge². The cathode releases lithium ions during charging ².

The electrolyte carries positively charged lithium ions from the anode to the cathode and vice versa through the separator². The movement of the lithium ions creates free electrons in the anode which creates a charge at the positive current collector². This flow of electrons through the wire is electricity¹.

The battery requires structure – provided by steel / aluminium or other material.s
